Int’l software training eyed with gov’t support

IF the Philippine government will cooperate, Cebu will soon have an international software training center that will further improve the quality of design software engineering in the country.

Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) president Robert Go said representatives of Cadence Design Systems Ltd. of Singapore were impressed with the presentations made by the CCCI, the Cebu Educational Development Foundation for IT (Cedf-it) and Cebu Software Development Industry Association Inc. (Cebu-Soft) regarding Cebu’s IT industry.

A team from Cadence, the largest supplier of electronic design technologies, methodology services and design services in Singapore, visited Cebu last Wednesday to study the possibility of investing in a design software training school in Cebu.

Go said the training school will bring advantage to the country, especially Cebu, in its aim to become the information and communications technology (ICT) hub in Asia, as the school will bring the quality of Cebu’s software engineers to a higher level.

High pay

Design software engineering is one of the highest paying jobs in information technology.

Due to the substantial investment needed for the school, Cadence is proposing a joint venture, possibly with the Philippine government, he said.

“The budget for the training school is very big. It has to be a concerted effort between the private sector and the government, possibly with the ICT Commission under the DOTC (Department of Transportation and Communications),” Go said.

Go got connected with the company when it made a presentation to the delegation of President Arroyo during her Sept. 7-9 state visit to Shanghai, China. Go was part of that delegation.

Cadence has a training school for software designs in China, where it is producing more than 1,000 graduates every year, the CCCI head said.

Go told Sun.Star Cadence will push through with its plans in Cebu if it can produce a minimum of 50 to 100 graduates a year in the country.

He said the team has committed to come back to Cebu on Nov. 5 to submit its proposal, which will include the requirement for the investment, to the government.

Cedf-it and CebuSoft will also present data on software engineers in Cebu such as the number of prospective trainees, Go said.

Cadence is headquartered in San Jose, California, USA, but has sales offices, design centers and research facilities around the world, including in Asia. (JBN)
