Non-stop fun at Slabadu

Resto bars normally just come and go: the sooner they pop up to the mainstream, the sooner they vanish into thin air.

“To survive, it takes a lot of hard work, patience, perseverance, dedication and creativity,” so says Ophelia Gallenero Nadela, the managing proprietor of Slabadu Café and Bistro, which just had its silver anniversary celebration last Friday.

“I have a hand on almost everything, from purchasing and marketing to stocks and operations and even on the kitchen and food preparation, ingon ana ko ka-all-around,” she laughs.

This sexy Ilongga and mother of two beautiful kids also cites the importance of good public relations for that’s how she wins customer’s trust and loyalty.

Ophie’s husband, Gene, was among the original frontliners of Harmony and Rhythm Band in 1979, along with some members of the family, when Slabadu was still located at the basement of the then Belvic Theatre.

Slabadu (the German colloquial term of “paradise”) has since become a byword in the entertainment circuit especially during the ‘80s, when showbands were sprouting all over like hot tempura. There were the Zee band, Silhouette, Sly Edge, Front Page, Harmony and Rhythm, just to name a few.

Slabadu moved twice before they eventually transferred to its present location in Mandaue city. It’s a 450-square meter structure where live music, fun, good food and drinks come together.

“I thank God that we’re still surviving despite being surrounded with all these competitors. We owe that to our friends in the business, the men and women behind Slabadu, and to my husband’s family, who started it all,” she pointed out.

Slabadu will have a repeat performance of its silver anniversary presentation for the pre-Halloween show this coming Oct. 30, Saturday, featuring house bands Fusion Wave, Southside, Harmony and Rhythm plus other surprise guests, who will be playing the best of Motown hits, Broadway, rock and roll, jazz, retro and a lot more.

Definitely, this will be another exciting night of non-stop fun and excellent music at the no. 1 and most tested entertainment hub to date— Slabadu Café and Bistro.
