Airport workers decide to end daily rallies
AIRPORT employees have decided to stop their daily protest-rally and just wait for the decision of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) board on the funding of their benefits.
Members of the MCIAA Employees’ Mutual Association (Mema) met General Manager Marcelino Cordova, who told them that their actions have somehow disturbed airline passengers and may affect MCIAA’s image.
The employees started their daily noonbreak protest last Oct. 19, after the MCIAA board failed to discuss the funding of their benefits during its meeting last Monday due to lack of time.
Funds
MCIAA public affairs manager Ahmed Cuizon said the employees’ benefits will be included in the agenda during the board’s meeting on Oct. 29.
The Court of Appeals (CA) in a decision last year ordered MCIAA to pay the airport employees their back benefits from 1991 to 2003 (estimated at P200 million) but subject to the availability of funds.
This means MCIAA is not obliged to pay the benefits if their funds are only enough for projects, especially related to airport security.
But Cuizon said MCIAA has already made partial payments.
During the meeting last Oct. 18, Mema officials and members expected the MCIAA board to appropriate an amount for their partial payments. However, the matter was not taken up due to lack of time, hence the daily protest-rally started last Oct. 19.
Assurance
Cuizon said Mema officials—namely Bongoyan, Emilia Perez, George Sagaysay, Eric Briones, Clifford Wahing, Marilyn Asok and Bonifacio Pusta—decided to lift the protest-rally after Cordova assured them that the funding for their benefits will be discussed on Oct. 29.
Meanwhile, airport employees have yet to refund the P52 million in cash benefits and cash assistance that they’ve received from MCIAA, covering 1999, 2000 and 2001.
The Commission on Audit has found it irregular for them to receive allowances, such as hataw, emergency assistance, and inflationary adjustment allowance, among others. (EOB)
