Caguioa explodes for 39 points in Kings win
BARANGAY Ginebra created a three-way traffic at the third spot in the Gran Matador PBA Philippine Cup yesterday after eking out a 126-121 victory over FedEx in the highest-scoring game so far this conference at the Gov. Angel Medina Gym in Ozamis City.
Marc “The Spark” Caguioa dished out import-like numbers for the Gin Kings, who have so far kept their road record clean, as he logged in 39 markers, 11 boards and four assists to lead his team to its second victory in four games.
Ginebra is now tied with FedEx and Purefoods at the third spot with similar 2-2 win-loss slates.
JJ Helterbrand likewise played one hell of a game as he chipped in 18 points, eight rebounds and 10 assists while Rodney Santos had 22 markers for Siot Tanquincen-coached squad.
The Kings’ camp also had Rommel Adducul come out big with 16 points and 11 rebounds while Migs Noble chipped in 10 points.
The Gin Kings were able to hold the Express at bay in the first two quarters at 30-23 and 62-54, respectively, but still couldn’t breakaway by much.
Then the Express, led by Cebuano Roger Yap’s 21 points and 10 assists, shifted to top gear in the third frame, outscoring Ginebra to enter the payoff period at 92-88. JSV
But the Kings came right back in front as Helterbrand lit up a huge rally that gave them a 111-101 lead with only four minutes left in the game, after which FedEx failed to recover. (JSV)
