Peñalosa to take on unbeaten Thai KO artist
YOUNG and undefeated Thai knockout artist Bangsaen Sithpra-prom is set to face Gerry Peñalosa for the vacant World Boxing Foundation (WBF) super-flyweight world title on Nov. 20.
Promoter Gabriel “Bebot” Elorde is eyeing either the Elorde Sports Center or the Casino Filipino-Amphitheater, both in Paranaque City, as venue.
100 fights
Elorde said Sithpra-prom had 100 fights with only two losses in muay Thai and ruled as Rajdamnern muay Thai super-flyweight champion before shifting to professional boxing.
The 20-year-old Sith-praprom is undefeated in 14 fights with seven going inside the distance.
On the other hand, the 32-year-old Peñalosa recently improved his record to 47 wins, five losses and two draws packed with 32 knockouts after winning a controversial comeback fight in Sept. 19 in Mandaue City.
Falsified
Peñalosa knocked out teener Samingkao Chu-tipol, also from Thailand, in 2:35 of round teo.
Matchmakers were found to have falsified Chutipol’s record and were subsequently suspended by the Games and Amusement Board. It was the Filipino’s first fight after announcing his retirement on January 2003.
Peñalosa ruled the WBC super-flyweight title from February 1997 until August 1998. He failed thrice to regain the crown: Once against his South Korean conqueror Injoo Cho and twice against Japan-based North Korean Masamori Toku-yama. (RCM)
