Pinoys hit back, beat danish team By Mike T. Limpag Sun.Star Correspondent
INTERNATIONAL Master Jayson Gonzales continued to shine as he nailed his fourth win to lead the Philippine team to a 3-1 win over Denmark in yesterday’s round six of the 36th World Chess Olympiad in Mallorca Spain.
Gonzales (Elo 2422), whose entry to the RP Team was the biggest surprise of the national qualifying event, defeated IM Nicolai Pederson (2466) on Board 4 to stay unbeaten with 4.5 points in five matches, while IM Mark Paragua (2534) also defeated GM Lars Schandorff (2510) on Board 3.
On the other hand, GM Eugene Torre (2518) recovered from his round-five loss to draw GM Hansen Sune Berg (2551), while GM Joey Antonio (2524) also drew with IM Davor Palo (2526).
The win vaulted the RP Team, which earlier lost to Canada, to 20th place with 15 points after six rounds, while leader Ukraine stayed on top with 19, a point ahead of top-seed Russia.
Meanwhile, the RP Ladies team also scored a 2-1 win against Turkey to move up to joint 33rd to 40th places.
WFM Sheerie Joy Lomibao and WIM Beverly Mendoza scored victories against WIMs Cemre Yidiz and Nilufer Cinar, respectively, while unrated Lorizel Quizon lost to Asli Bayrak.
The ladies now have 9.5 points, while China is still on top with 16 points, three points clear of second-placer France.
The tournament will have a rest day today and will resume tomorrow.
