Tribu Sugbu plays Forward Taguig in NBC nat’l. finals

GAME TODAY
(CP Tinga Memorial Hall, Taguig)
6 p.m. – Tribu Sugbu vs. Forward Taguig

TRIBU Sugbu invades the north today as it faces Forward Taguig in Game 1 of their best-of-three NBC National Championship finals at the C.P. Tinga Memorial Hall in Taguig.

The two teams, possessing contrasting styles and two celebrated coaches, will slug it out for the all-important series-opener victory.

Rookie coach Al Solis of the Skygo Motorcycle-backed Tribu Sugbu, who steered the Tribesmen to a league-best 10-4 record, will try to live up to his billing as one of the league’s top mentors.

His opponent across the bench, the veteran Danny Gavieres, is gunning to ride the momentum of a 4-1 playoffs slate after sweeping North top-seed Laguna Springs.

High scoring

Solis loves to run and keep the score high evident in the Tribesmen’s 87-93, 106-86 and 85-82 South Division finals results against the Ozamiz Cotta, while Gavierres is more defense oriented, marked by Taguig’s 58-56 and 80-66 victories over Laguna.

“We have a better chance after beating Taguig twice in the eliminations and we are not about to fall to them. Ozamis is a much tougher team than Taguig, although, I hope the fatigue factor will not affect our game,” Solis said.

On the other hand, Gavieres said, “The stats will no longer matter once the series starts. We’re ready for them.” Gavieres is the leading candidate for the NBC Coach of the Year award for steering the team from a 1-5 start to the national championship.

Top tribesmen

Jojo Tangkay and veteran Ruben dela Rosa will lead the Cebuano squad alongside rising stars Ardy Larong, Ronald Bucao, Chico Lanete, Alfie Grijaldo, Dennis Concha and Marvin Mercado. Jeffrey Sanders and Marlon Piodo’s contributions will also matter.

While Taguig will bank on the tandem of All-Stars Jimboy Robillos and Ogie Gumatay.

The inside-outside duo will draw support from former collegiate stars Miko Roldan, Andrew Cruz, Mapua Cardinal Jerome Reyes and veterans Leo Vilar and Bernard de Guia.

The series goes to Cebu for Game 2 on Monday, and if necessary, Game 3 on Wednesday. (RCM)
