Ermita wins P100T for children’s program
BARANGAY Ermita will receive P100,000 from the Cebu City Government for having the most outstanding Barangay Council for the Protection of Children (BCPC).
The City, which celebrates October as Children’s Month, picked the best among the city’s 80 barangays in an evaluation made since July this year.
1st winner
Ermita became the first winner in the search commissioned by the Cebu City Center for the Protection and Welfare of Children (CCCWPC).
Barangay Lorega-San Miguel placed second and will get P75,000 while Barangay Tisa is third and will receive P50,000.
Annabeth Cuizon, CCCWPC head, said the award will come in a form of City-supported projects.
That means the three winning barangays will have to submit project proposals and use each of their cash awards as funding.
Cuizon said that among the 25 functional BCPCs in Cebu City, Ermita edged out the others in meeting six indicators adopted by the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef).
Monitoring
Her office deployed eight personnel who discretely monitored the barangays in terms of existence of each of their BCPCs.
In accepting the award, Barangay Captain Felicisimo Rupinta asked the City to provide more funds for “child-friendly” projects.
Cuizon said that although BCPCs already existed in the 80 barangays, only 25 were functional.
Evaluation
She hoped that with the search, the rest of the barangays will strengthen their respective BCPCs.
During the evaluation, the personnel from CCCWPC noted that Ermita has a clearly defined BCPC organizational structure, with a 65.1-percent attendance during their regular monthly meetings.
Also taken into consideration was the presence of a quick response team for rescue operations and funds were made available for children.
Cuizon said that although the award does not mean that Ermita is the most child friendly barangay, it has earned the distinction of having an outstanding program for children. (RHM)
