Guidicelli hailed Karter of Year
CARMONA, CAVITE – Cebu Racing Group’s Matteo Guidicelli came right on course for a historic feat to bag the coveted Karter of the Year plum yesterday in the 2004 PCSO-Shell Superkarting Series at the Carmona Circuit Philippines here.
The 15-year-old Guidicelli, backed up by Penshoppe and Addict Mobile Prepaid, became the first karter to win two titles in one season – the premiere Open class and the Rotax Max Junior crown – aside from being the first Cebu-based karter to claim the KOY award of this event sanctioned by the Automobile Association of the Philippines and sponsored by the Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office through Hon. Rosario Uriarte, San Miguel Corp., Comglasco Aguila Glass, Bridgestone, Aviva Insurance, Eastway Motorcycle Racing and Denso Iridium Power.
Enough points
He didn’t win the final race in both classes but the points he earned in the three races last weekend were enough to clinch the championship in both divisions.
Guidicelli only placed second in the Open class where he amassed a total of 330 points to wrest the Karter of the Year award from last year’s champion Michelle Bumgarner of M&M Racing, who totaled 291.
He likewise ended third in the Rotax Max Junior final race where he tallied 321 points to win the title – just 6.5 ahead of closest rival Marlon Stockinger of Birel-Fila, who had 314.5 points.
“God’s blessings were more than what I expected. My parents Gianluca and Glenna, my sponsors, the crew, my fellow karters and the media all inspired me to give my very best to achieve this rare feat, which I’d like to share with them,” said Guidicelli.
The Bumgarners – Michelle and Mark – actually stole the limelight from Guidicelli in the final race.
Bang
Michelle, just as she promised, ended the series with a bang as she posted the fastest laptime of 44.926 to control the Open class race all throughout and finish the 20-lap race in 15:42.400 or a far 14.522 seconds ahead of Guidicelli.
Mark pulled a decisive move in the final lap to rule the Rotax Max Junior class.
He was trailing third behind Stockinger and Guidicelli, the two protagonists for the crown who were dicing each other for the lead during the first 19 laps.
But just as Stockinger took a dive on Guidicelli at the first turn, Bumgarner took the opportunity to slip past the two and hold on to the pole to the finish line.
Sharing the limelight with Guidicelli were Ayrton Cuesta and Roman Academia.
Cuesta, despite losing the final race to Alessandra Madrigal of Team Alessandra-PCR, went on to claim the Cadet class while Academia likewise captured the TRS-Pika Kids Karting crown though finishing only third to race champion Rafael Benito and runner-up Juha Turalba.
