Australian offers to manage Bautista

AFTER a series of tremendous performances that made him a world champion prospect, Rey “Boom-Boom” Bautista flies to Australia today with his trainer Edito Villamor upon the invitation of an Australian boxing promoter.

The 18-year-old knockout sensation from Candijay, Bohol was invited by Murray Thomson to visit the Fighters Factory gym in Blackburn Road, Blackburn, Victoria.

Thomson, who offered to co-manage the WBO Asia-Pacific bantamweight champion, got interested in Bautista after the Filipino’s recent big wins.

“Actually Thomson offered to manage Bautista. That is why he is inviting him to visit his gym all expenses paid,” said New Generation ALA Boys handler Antonio Lopez Aldeguer in a gathering at the Café Adriatico at the Cross Roads yesterday. “Thomson saw two of his fights and was very impressed.”

Bautista is expected to be at the corner helping Villamor when New Generation ALA Boy member Bart Abapo fights in a six round bout in Melbourne on Nov. 11.

Different cultures

“All we want is to expose Bautista to different kinds of fighters and their cultures,” said Villamor. “He is very lucky; I did not get the same kind of attention during my time. Exposing young boxers to international fights is essential in making a world champion.”

Meanwhile, Z Gorres arrived from Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, California, to make his final preparations for his fight in December.

Nicknamed “The Dream,” Gorres trained with Roach last Sept. 8. Gorres will be in the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Fahsan (3-K Battery) Por Thawatchai on Dec. 11 in Taguig.

“The rigorous training there was almost as extensive as our training here. The only difference is that I sparred with different kind of fighters. I sparred with Fil-Am Brian Viloria, Mexican and other fighters,” Gorres said.
