Wenceslao: Ouano, Soon-Ruiz, Miriam By Bong O. Wenceslao
Is it good for Mandaue City and the sixth district, or is it not? I am referring to the exchange of allegations between the warring political camps of Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano and Rep. Nerissa Soon-Ruiz. If you ask me, I say the conflict should be worth our while because it is exposing things that otherwise would have been hidden.
Now almost everybody knows Soon-Ruiz owns a house she did not declare in her Statement of Assets and Liabilities (SAL). This is the same Soon-Ruiz who wanted a decent Cebuano, Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr., impeached for dubious reasons. I agree her house is not a mansion as claimed—but why did she not bring it up in her SAL?
Anyway, Soon-Ruiz hitting back is also good because now an informal lifestyle check is being conducted on Ouano through the media. There is, for example, the matter of two Jollibee franchises that his critics are using to prove irregular conduct. Ouano, who is virtually unopposed in Mandaue, must now to explain this to his constituents.
For sometime now, the leadership and governance of the two protagonists have not been scrutinized well. This is because attention has been on the Province (with the Garcia-Martinez rift) and Cebu City (Osmena vs. Garcia).
The Ouano-Soon Ruiz verbal war, therefore, should be enlightening for Mandaue and even other Cebu residents.
MIRIAM’S FURY. Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago is on a rampage, and it certainly doesn’t look that good for the Senate. The sight of Santiago seething with fury when the bill that aims to classify the University of the Philippines as a national university was tackled stunned many. Of course, she probably was just being Miriam.
Besides, it was consistent with the scene after his son, who was denied admission to the UP College of Law several months back, committed suicide.
Santiago was every inch a mother then, crying for the supposed injustice heaped on her child. Thus, one should not be surprised if the tears would now turn into anger against some UP officials.
But hearing her throw insults that, as we Cebuanos would describe as dili makaon sa iro, in a Senate proceeding is, I think, already too much.
TEXTREAX. From Engr. Roy Arrojado: “I agree with your opinion about the imperialist United States. Ambot bitaw nganong daghan mang Pinoy ang naghuwat sa resulta sa eleksyon nga bisan kinsa ang modaug nga presidente dili man gihapon mausab ang foreign policy sa US. Search and destroy lang gihapon. War is big business—just ask our generals.”
From an unidentified texter: “Sen. John Kerry called up President George W. Bush to inform him he is conceding. Meanwhile, Bush was magnanimous in victory. No, sir, such things won’t happen in Mandaue City.”
