Santos rescues Kings from defeat

RODNEY Santos drilled in a 3-point jumper yesterday to rescue Barangay Ginebra from disaster as the Kings nipped the Coca-Cola Tigers, 96-95, in the Gran Matador PBA Philippine Cup at the Lagao Gym in General Santos City.

With 6.1 seconds left in the game and the Tigers ahead by two points, 95-93, Santos inbounded the ball to Eric Menk, who returned the leather to Santos and then set up a big screen for the booming shot.

The thrilling victory created a three-way logjam at second spot alongside the Kings’ victim and the San Miguel Beer, all carrying 4-3 win-loss slates.

Best player

Santos, the Best Player of the Game, scored 16 markers in the see-saw battle that saw several lead changes and long rallies.

The Tigers actually had the win in their hands when John Arigo broke the 93-all deadlock with a strong drive to the hoop, just after Menk bungled both his free throws.

Mark Caguioa also played big for the boys of Ginebra coach Siot Tanquincen as he logged in 26 markers, while the 6-foot-6 Menk added 12 points and 15 boards.

The Tigers overwhelmed the Kings with their aggressiveness in offense in the opening quarter as they raced to a 30-18 edge at the end of the first period.

The Kings reversed the momentum in the next canto as they gained the edge, 52-47, at the half.

Both teams took turns in taking the lead in the third quarter before Ginebra held the driver’s seat at 79-74, entering the fourth. (JSV)
