‘Revamp’ in education needed for RP to succeed in Info Age
THERE is a need to improve the educational system in the country to meet the needs of the Information Age, according to the head of the newly created Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT).
“A revamped education system is needed to succeed in the Information Age,” one that will imbue Filipinos with the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the demands of the times, said CICT Commissioner Emmanuel Lallana.
During the third anniversary celebration of the Cebu Educational Development Foundation for Information Technology (Cedf-it) last Friday at City Sports Club Cebu, he admitted that educational reform is a “monumental undertaking.”
“But if we want to succeed in the IT Age, we need to do it, and to do it well,” he told the members and guests present including Presidential Daughter Evangelina “Luli” L.M. Arroyo, who inducted the boards of Cedf-it, the IT Teachers Academy, and the Professional Certification and Training Center that same evening.
Active role
Executive Order 269 created the CICT in January this year.
CICT, successor to the Information Technology and E-Commerce Council or Itecc, is not merely an advisory board, but plays an active role in ensuring the supply of human resources for the information and communications technology (ICT) industry.
“We are tasked to promote the development of IT expertise in human capital to enable Filipinos to compete in the Information Age,” Lallana said.
The commission is now coordinating with the Department of Education and Commission on Higher Education on the development of ICT education.
The CICT is also tasked to implement a comprehensive IT skills development plan in government, he said. (CTL)
