Central Visayas gets P19B in investments
OVER P19 billion in investments was poured into Central Visayas in the first nine months of this year.
Data from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) show a 27 percent increase in the capital poured in by single proprietorships to P19.10 billion.
This came after 9,907 new businesses registered with the DTI, up 14 percent from the 8,718 that took the plunge in the same period last year.
Over at the Securities and Exchange Commission, the number of partnerships that registered slid seven percent to 127, while the number of corporations was down eight percent to 620.
The value of the investments in partnerships grew a modest two percent to P42.85 million.
There were no figures for the investments in corporations, but during the same period last year, the 676 corporations that registered plunked in P4.3 billion.
There was also good news from the Board of Investments (BOI), which registers companies eligible for incentives like income tax holidays, exemption from taxes and duties on imported spare parts, exemption from wharfage dues and the like.
Investments registered with the BOI more than tripled to P816.67 million from P195.67 million the year before.
The new investments pushed up employment in the region.
The Mactan Economic Zone (MEZ) 1 recorded a seven percent increase in employees to 42,083 despite the shrinking of the number of firms in that zone to 105 from 107.
MEZ 2 recorded an even bigger jump in employment at 20 percent, as the number of firms there expanded to 46 from 39.
At Asiatown IT Park, the workforce more than doubled to 950 from 355, as Cebu steps up its marketing efforts and prepares its human resources to power its dream of becoming an information technology hub.
MRI Economic Zone also reported a 12 percent leap in the number of employees to 18,019. MRI in Danao City is where the Japanese electronics behemoth Cebu Mitsumi Inc. is located.
Mitsumi is the largest employer in Cebu province, spending some P40 million for its monthly payroll.
The DTI 7 reported that Mitsumi was also the largest exporter of the region in the first nine months of this year.
Central Visayas groups the provinces of Cebu, Bohol, Negros Oriental and Siquijor. (CTL)
