Magsaysay: Happily ever after By Jo Magsaysay Whatever
Gracefully, she walked down the aisle, this exquisitely lovely crea ture, tall and slender, with satiny petal skin, dancing almond eyes and radiant smile.
So, I wondered, why is she called by this bellicore nickname “Bangbang?” Then it hit me: Olivia Lynn Uy is simply drop dead gorgeous! Bangbang!

Not to be overshadowed in his own wedding, the bridegroom, Rafael J. Dizon III, who answers to another remarkable nickname “Boydee” stood out. Not only is he good looking, he is smart, witty, articulate, utterly charming and as former Philippine President Corazon C. Aquino observed, he has the confidence of a politician. A perfect mate for the multi-talented civic-spirited Bangbang and he makes her laugh! A dear close friend of the mother of the bride, Nonila T. Uy, best known and best loved as “Nonie,” Cory Aquino came all the way from Manila to be the madrina for the young couple who had also other distinguished sponsors: James Sy Chua, Margarita “Margot” Vargas Osmeña, Cecilio Kwok Pedro, John Yap Young, Tersisita Dizon, Henry Kwan Chang and Victoria Subia Ungco.

One only has to drop the name of Phillip Rodriguez and the style and elegance synonymous to haute couture takes one’s breath away. Bangbang of course was breathtaking in her ivory terno, incredibly simple, undoubtedly beautiful with a plain tulle veil allowed to float like mist around her.
She carried a magnificent bouquet of orchids and fragrant ropes of fresh sampaguitas; the flower girls, Roanne Alise B. Dizon, Romina Rafaelle D. Gavino, Rianne Elle B. Dizon and Raissa Regatta D. Gavino in picturesque candy-striped frocks carried orchids in their baskets. Like little taipans in their high-collared Chinese suits buttoned down with braided frogs were the bearers:
Jose Miguel Uy for the rings, Kyle Christopher Liu for the coins, Roman Rafael D. Gavino for the Bible and Riley Ethan Dizon for the rosary. Standing as the groom’s best man was Bienvenido M. Gonzales III and his honor attendant, Dexter S. Go, while May Marie T. Go was matron of honor.

Spontaneous applause greeted Nonie Uy as she walked down the aisle escorted by her son Louis Arthur. One would think she was the bride but she did look really quite gorgeous in her gown of such stunning color combination in flaming hot orange and cool mint green. Rosaline P. Dizon, extremely elegant in a fuchsia pink terno threaded with silver embroidery looked every inch the proud and happy mother of the groom, on the arm of her husband, Rafael J. Dizon, of the prominent Pampanga Dizons. Picking up the fuchsia pink colors, bromeliads spreading their glossy waxen leaves, pink anthuriums and clawlike haleconia identified by Teresin Mendezona as sexy pink were paraded along the middle aisle of the Sacred Heart Church carpeted with emerald green felt for the occasion. A portrait of the late Victor Uy, well-respected taipan in the Chinese community and local business circles, took a prominent place in the chancel reminding the wedding guests that this was the beloved father of the bride, her papa’s girl.

A huge gathering of friends and relatives, almost a thousand estimated by the number of tables and chairs, converged in the Atlantic Hall of the Waterfront Hotel. The formal sit-down dinner after the cocktail reception was reserved by an orderly retinue of waiters flaunting trays of minestone soup, shrimp and scallop salad, steamed fish with an audacious sauce and Angus rib-eye roast drenched with the savory gravy that is the house specialty of Chateau de Busay, Nonie Uy’s very own restaurant high on the hills of Busay.

The love story of Boydee and Bangbang unfolded on giant screens from their meeting four years ago to the marriage proposal in Hong Kong filmed on tape. Boydee must be in advertising or showbiz or he is just simply a young man passionately in love to record every gesture, every expression, every word from his singing Fallen In Love, getting down on his knees to propose marriage and then singing a love song in Chinese which naturally crumbled all of Nonie’s resistance to losing her beautiful baby girl, friend, confidant and companion to marriage. She has not lost a daughter, as they say, she gained a son…and so, as all love stories should end, they all live happily ever after.
