Ex-Tigers help beat Coke

THE Alaska Aces won yesterday’s battle of “bad blood” as they annihilated the Coca-Cola Tigers, 98-88, in the Gran Matador PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

In the opening game, Red Bull Barako notched its third win in eight games as it beat the Shell Turbo Chargers, 94-90.

Lordy Tugade logged in 20 points, seven rebounds and two assists for the Barakos to snare the Best Player of the Game award.

Former Coca-Cola players Reynel Hugnatan and Jeffrey Cariaso registered double-double performances in helping bury their former squad.

Hugnatan pumped in 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Cariaso had 20 points, 10 assists and five rebounds in helping deal the Tigers their third straight loss and fifth overall in nine games.

Game’s best player

Brandon Lee Cablay came out the most potent weapon of Alaska coach Tim Cone as he logged in 21 markers on top of two boards to grab the Best Player of the Game award.

Two former Alaska Aces, Ali Peek and John Arigo, combined for 50 points for the Tigers’ total output, but their efforts were no match against the balanced scoring of the Aces, who had five players in double-digit scores.

Bong Hawkins also had a productive night for the Aces as the veteran sank 15 markers, while Don Allado added 12 points and four boards.

The Aces dominated the Tigers from start to finish, never allowing the latter to take a taste of the lead until the final buzzer.

After erecting an 18-point edge in the second quarter, the only nervous moments that the Aces experienced in the game was when the Tigers tied the count at 79-all in the last 5:30 of the game after an eight-to-nothing run by the latter. (JSV)
