Officials propose transfer of int’l port to Cordova

THE Cebu International Port (CIP) will be definitely transferred to Cordova, Cebu once a new international port will be built, said Cebu Port Authority (CPA) General Manager Mariano C.J. Martinez.

Martinez said they are planning to convert CIP into a domestic port especially that 17 percent or about 750 meters of domestic berthing areas became part of the South Reclamation Project (SRP) and docking area of Malacañang sa Sugbo.

Once CIP is transferred to Cordova, the present CIP will become an expansion of domestic ports, which are now overcrowded due to increasing domestic vessels plying Cebu City to the different ports of the Visayas and Mindanao.

Traffic

Another advantage, Martinez said, is the decongestion of traffic that has been a perennial probzlem in the cities of Cebu and Mandaue.

“We are proceeding with this project step by step,” he said.

Martinez said the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) has conducted a study on a new international port in Liloan town but recommended a 15-meter high reclamation to reach a manmade island.

Also, the proposed Liloan international port needs access roads to connect the North Coastal Road in Mandaue City that will involve expropriation of properties.

Costly

“A 15-meter high reclamation is higher than a four-story building, while expropriation of properties needs huge funding so that this proposed Liloan international port project will be costly,” Martinez said.

A Hong Kong-based firm was recently hired by CPA to do a hydrographic study to check if Cordova’s sea goes as deep as 18 meters, hence ideal for an international port.

Based on the recommendation, Martinez said the CPA engineering is conducting a technical study, including a little reclamation work on an area leading to the deep sea, and the construction of access roads leading to the site of the proposed port.

Martinez said the planned international port in Cordova could be easy to realize because Mayor Arleigh Sitoy is a “progressive thinker” who supports projects that could bring economic development.

He also said Mayor Arturo Radaza of Lapu-Lapu City, which is adjacent to Cordova, is a “reasonable person” so CPA is optimistic that facilities like roads linking a new international port, Cordova and Lapu-Lapu can easily be implemented. (EOB)
