Cebu dancers get 2 Seag slots

TEAM Cebu City-Dancesport swept the Amateur Latin division and bagged two slots to the 2005 Southeast Asian Games in yesterday’s DanceSports National Championship at the PhilSports Arena yesterday.

Multi-titled Michael Mendoza and new partner Belinda Adora clinched the gold medal in the Amateur Latin event, while Errol Melencio and Dearlie Gerodias claimed the silver.

Richard Obong and Genevieve Camacho bagged the bronze. However, only the top two finishers will qualify to represent the country to the biennial Games.

Mendoza’s original partner Francesca Mazzacurati, an Italian, was not qualified to compete in the qualifier, however, she was able to dance in the Latin category.

Cebu City will host the 2005 Seag Dancesport event, which could produce the first medal for the Philippines in the 10-nation competition.

In the Amateur Modern Standard, real-life couple Jerswin and Ann Poloyapoy bagged the bronze medal.

The Cebuanos dominated the event with Jimmy Noel and Ariadne Velasquez taking the gold medal in Special Event 1 Latin, Jojie and Jonah del Rosario winning the gilt in the Special Event 1 Modern Standard.

Cebu’s Bernie Tomarong and Anna Dimaano racked up gold in the Special Event 2 Modern Standard. (RCM)
