Chiongbian: More holes for more holes-in-one
By Edgar R. Chiongbian

TODAY is the last day to get that special merchandise via a hole-in-one in the MSY golf tournament. By now, a few should already have accomplished this. If not, let us add more holes next time and see a stampede of winners break lose.

For those who are still feeling lucky, better bring a truck to the awarding dinner so you can load up that refrigerator or TV set you will win in the raffles.

As a handful of our golf buddies struggled with the competition during the Founders Cup golf tournament at Orchard GCC, our other golf buddies are simply enjoying their casual hi-lo matches at CCC. We tried to bring these guys to Manila and the real world but, nah, they prefer the simple life and of course the comfort of home.

This week has been a busy one for sports competition. And also just concluded in Manila was the National Dancesport Championship held at the Ultra Sports Complex. With the help of Cebu City, they were able to send over a hundred participants to represent the City.

The results were not ready at press time but we are very confident that our team Cebu City will once again win most of the awards as in past competitions. But what we’re not sure about is who will be picked to represent the Philippines in the next SEA Games, as they had allotted an extra day for the selection.

Next week is yet another hectic week for our Rotary Club of Cebu as we host our sister clubs from Singapore, Malaysia and New Territories and Hong Kong. RC Cebu club president Ricky Dakay has set up a heavy schedule for their visit. And since all work and no play makes Juan a dull boy, our club has arranged for some golf and scuba diving for our visitors.

Their trip will culminate with a medical mission on Saturday in Candulawan, Minglanilla, which was specially arranged by our club member, Jonathan Gesalem. So if you’re ever in the area, stop by for some Dunkin Donuts. See you at the mission!

It is less than two weeks away for Club Filipino’s President’s Cup. You guys better sign up in a hurry and then play a practice round in Danao because they have made some changes to the golf course. It will be team play, four players with three to count. Since you will need only one member to qualify as a team, it shouldn’t be too hard to form one. So there, what’s your excuse?

Cebu Country Club is also preparing for their President Cup, which will be sometime in the middle of December. With Samsung coming up in December and also the Nike jungolf tournament, December should be a busy month for golf.

Before we go to golf tips, I would like to share with you what my good friend Rolf Hess said about them, “Golf tips are like aspirin. One may do you good, but if you swallow the whole bottle you will be lucky to survive.”

So consider yourself warned but don’t worry it is not life threatening according to Drs. Wyben Briones, Boy Layno and Ben Aldana.

GOLF TIP: It is very important to wriggle your feet in the sand when preparing for a bunker shot. Your outright benefit is getting some knowledge on the texture of the sand; whether the sand is soft or firm and how deep the sand is to the base. This will allow you to plan ahead where to land your clubhead in the sand and how deep to cut the shot.

The general rule is to hit two inches behind the ball for soft sand and about one inch or closer for firm sand.

To avoid the bouncing effect of the sand wedge, you might want to consider using a pitching wedge for firm sand.

The other benefit of digging your feet in the sand is that the firm footing promotes an upper body swing with the hands, wrist and arms. And to achieve good results with your sand shots, you should keep your lower body action to a minimum.
