Tortillos triumph

Ardy Larong scored 17 points in 23 minutes, providing a solid game on both ends as the Cebuanos of Granny Goose Tortillos shone in carving a 70-58 win over Welcoat Paints yesterday in the PBL Open Championship at La Salle Greenhills.

In the main game, Magnolia Dairy Ice Cream-FEU pounded ICTSI-La Salle, which suffered in the absence of its leading-scorer Mark Cardona, 85-55.

Larong displayed his best game in the league so far, adding seven rebounds, one assist and one steal, while providing sticky defense on 6-foot-7 Fil-Am Anthony Washington, who struggled throughout the game.

The former USJ-R Jaguar, Larong, scored a triple, a fastbreak and two free throws in the Snacksmasters’ telling 9-0 blitz that broke the 50-all deadlock just a little below seven minutes in the fourth quarter.

Streak ended

Joseph Ronald Quiñahan also stepped up in the final period, scoring seven points that helped Granny Goose regain its double-digit lead, leading to its third straight win and snapping Welcoat’s two-game winning streak.

On the other hand, Chico Lanete was a vital factor with his backcourt hustle, giving the Welcoat ball carriers a hard time setting up their taller frontcourt.

Lanete drained two of his three triples in the third quarter as Granny Goose erected a 33-21 lead.

Second half

After a low-scoring first half, both teams caught fire in the second half with Chester Tolomia finding his mark and the 6-6 Allan Gamboa earning his numbers down low to fill the void left by Washington.

Jett Latonio only had eight points but came out big for coach Jun Tan as he drained the huge shots when Welcoat caught up in the third canto, while Joseph Ronald Quiñahan took on taller opponents that included Washington, Gamboa, 6-8 JR Reyes and 6-6 Marvin Ortiguerra.

Quiñahan, who scored nine points, eight rebounds and four blocks, proved to be a rock in the middle, forcing Welcoat’s big men to work extra hard in the paint.

The concerted efforts of the Snacksmasters helped them lead the entire game but Welcoat was always on the chase until the endgame.

Granny Goose (70) – Larong 14, Lanete 11, Capati 10, Quinahan 9, Latonio 8, Almeda 6, Santos 4, David 2, Cocha 2, Cervantes 2, Ibanes 1, Grijaldo 1. Welcoat (58) – Tolomia 16, Gamboa 13, Ortiguerra 11, Washington 8, Reyes 4, Tan 3, Dy 3, Sta. Maria 0, Estrada 0, Yee 0, Najorda 0. Quarterscores: 15-10; 26-21; 48-43; 70-58. (RCM)
