Basak folks nix housing project

THE proposed socialized housing project for Lapu-Lapu City’s more than 200 households, who will be displaced by the new market in Barangay Gun-ob, is in for some rough sailing.

The Basak Barangay Council passed a resolution last month “denying or banning” the relocation of some Barangay Gun-ob residents to Barangay Basak.

Over 350 residents have also signed a petition expressing their opposition to the City’s housing project in the area. They fear the project will only worsen their problem with squatters.

“There are already a number of low-cost and high-end housing subdivisions present in the area and it is not suitable to have squatters living nearby,” the barangay resolution stated.

Not for squatters

Councilor Mario Amores, chairman of the committee on urban poor, told Sun.Star yesterday that the housing project in Basak is not really for the squatters.

The City Government is acquiring a 5.5-hectare lot in Sitio Humay-Humay, Barangay Gun-ob to house altogether the megadome, fire station and public market.

Lot owners and lessees who will be displaced by the project may avail themselves of the City’s proposed socialized housing project, which will be located in a 1.2-hectare lot in Sudtonggan, Basak.

Amores said they have already explained these things to the barangay officials and their constituents.

But while the barangay officials are already amenable to the plan, some residents are still against it.

Delay

He said the residents’ opposition will really delay the housing project because its implementation will require social acceptability.

The Lapu-Lapu City Council initially tried to address the problem after receiving a copy of the barangay resolution, but the body decided last week to just leave the matter to the mayor.

Amores told his colleagues during their session last week that he and Mayor Arturo Radaza had already discussed the housing project with the residents.

He confirmed there are indeed “mixed reactions” to the City’s plan.

“We have to study this further because this might just be a ploy by the land owners so their lots will not be expropriated,” said Councilor Berdin, who is also a resident of Barangay Basak.
