Cebuano keeper takes first test versus Myanmar
PLAYING in his first international match, 18-year-old Michael Casas will have a Herculean task ahead of him – help win the country’s first Tiger Cup match.
The former Carmen National School goalkeeper will be manning the goal today when the Philippines face off with Myanmar in its first Group B match at the at the Bukit Jalil Stadium in Petaling Jaya.
Since the Tiger Cup started in 1996, the Philippines has never won a single match, and its best finish was a draw with Cambodia in 1996.
RP’s youngest
Casas, the youngest starting keeper for the national team, got his job after another former Cebu-based player, Ref Cuaresma, injured his finger in a practice session.
“I hope that Michael does well in his first senior international tournament. I hope his normally unreliable defense will protect him. It would be shattering for him but he has a strong character,” Casas former coach, Graeme Mackinnon, said in a text message to Sun.Star Cebu.
Casas played for Carmen for four years, and his former teammates recently finished runner-up in the just concluded Adidas Under-19 Championships. (ML)
