Jewelers depart for Ilocos today

M. LHUILLIER Kwarta Padala-Cebu City will leave for Ilocos Sur today in a bid to conquer the odds and win one of the first two games of the best-of-five championship series of the United Regional Basketball League at the Sto. Domingo People’s Center in Sto. Domingo, Ilocos Sur.

Game 1 is scheduled Friday and Game 2 on Saturday. A win by the Jewelers in Ilocos Sur means they can wrap up the series at home by winning two games starting with Game 3 on Dec. 15 at the Cebu Coliseum.

Important game

“It’s a tough task but with the way the players are gearing towards the series, I believe we can win at least one game there,” said M. Lhuillier head coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba.

With starter Bong Marata fully recovered from his foot injury, M. Lhuillier is looking to keep the Snipers in check all game long.

“Game 1 is most important since winning it will pressure the opponents especially that it’s a back-to-back games format. Every player knows how important our task is because it was their own fault we missed the homecourt advantage,” said Alcoseba, referring to the 21-point lead the Jewelers wasted Friday when they hosted the Snipers.

Team meeting

Cebu City still won that semifinal game, 74-68, but below the 15-point margin they needed to get the homecourt edge.

The Jewelers had a meeting last Sunday and the players promised the coaching staff they would work doubly hard than they did in the semis.

“We’ve all set our minds on winning at least one game in Ilocos Sur,” said M. Lhuillier team captain Bruce Dacia. “We’ve come this far and we cannot allow the title to slip away from our hands. With the all-out support given to us by our team owners, everybody is raring to step up.”
