Magnolia gets back at Tortillos
By Rommel C. Manlosa

EXACTLY a month after suffering an agonizing defeat against Granny Goose Tortillos, the Magnolia Dairy Ice Cream-FEU Wizards came up with a vengeful 72-62 win over the Snacksmasters in the second round of the PBL Open Championships at the Makati Sports Complex yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Welcoat Paintmasters survived Toyota Otis-Letran’s endgame scare, 75-68, in the opening match.

It seemed like Granny Goose finally ran out of magic as they suffered their second consecutive defeat in the round, while the Wizards extended their win roll to five.

In a hurry

“The players were in a hurry; they wanted to regain the lead fast when Magnolia was ahead in the final five minutes. I kept reminding them to stay focused and play our game. But it did not happen,” Granny Goose coach Jun Tan said.

Down, 54-44, at the 8:04 mark of the final fram it seemed that every Snackmaster wanted to score as they cut the lead to five with 6:28 left. But the individualistic game allowed the Wizards to score a quick 7-0 blitz to stretch the lead to 61-49 with 5:33 to go.

Tan called for a breather and his team got back, 62-59, before the Snackmasters made the errors that allowed the Wizards to make the final breakaway.
