Bitoon grabs solo lead in Rose chess tourney

INTERNATIONAL Master Richard Bitoon moved a few rounds away from a Christmas present and a birthday gift rolled into one.

Bitoon, who will celebrate his 29th birthday tomorrow, grabbed the solo lead of the Rose Pharmacy Open Active Handicapping Tournament after beating third-seed National Master Elmer Sumngat in the sixth round at SM City-Cebu.

The win put the Medellin, Cebu native on top of the nine-round tournament with six points. Half a point behind at second is Carlos Moreno III, who has 5.5 points after he beat Jojo Santos in the sixth round, while seven players are grouped at third with five points each.

Five pointers

Anthony Makinano led the group of five-pointers with his win over Joel Pacuribot. Also with five points are Aldwin Daculan, Santos, Christopher Tubalado, Francisco Abugho, Sumngat and Richard Natividad.

Daculan upset NM Mardonio Fuentes, Tubalado defeated Antonio Cabibil, Abugho earned a point over Voltaire Sevillano, while Natividad beat Bob Tojing.

The players were still playing the final three rounds at press time yesterday. (ML)
