Castañares bags WBF crown via TKO in 4th round
By Rommel C. Manlosa

DINDO Castañares’ day under the sun finally came when the RP 140-pound king won the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) light-welterweight title via a sensational fourth-round technical-knockout win over New Zealand-based Argentine Guillermo “Pantera” Mosquera at the Unitec Technological Institute in Auckland Saturday.

Prior to the fight, Castañares’ career was reeling after a series of defeats abroad. The victory snapped his four-fight losing streak, which includes two TKO defeats in Japan and a draw and another TKO loss in Indonesia.

Killer flurry

A highly-motivated Castañares showed why he is called “Diesel” after using his jab to keep Mosquera at bay before unleashing a killer flurry to win the fight at the 1:47 mark of the fourth round.

The 25-year-old ALA Boy didn’t give Mosquera, who entered the ring in a king’s garb and carried by servants, a chance to size him up. And when Castañares connected on killer body shots, the former WBC international champion, Pantera, begged referee Ignatius Missailidis to stop the contest.

“I am very happy for Dindo. This proves that he is a force to reckon with if he is in shape. This (WBF title) might jumpstart his career to a new level, who knows. But I believe Sammy (Gelloani) is the lucky charm in our international campaigns,” said ALA Boys handler Antonio Lopez Aldeguer.

Fiancee

The victory was Castañares’ 15th and his 11th KO in a record that includes three defeats and a draw, while Mosquera, who was supposed to ask his Italian fiancee to marry him on the ring had he won the belt, dropped to 38 wins (19 KOs), six losses and a draw.

Aldeguer is scheduled to give the victorious Castañares a welcome and thanksgiving dinner when the former bemedaled amateur arrives tonight along with Gello-ani and second-man Danny Bactol.
