MLSDF Futsal challenge: Carolinians cop Women’s title

MARILOU Solon scored four goals for the University of San Carlos to lead the team’s 7-3 win over title-favorite Don Bosco College in the Women’s division championship game of the 1st MLSDF - M. Lhuillier Dried Mango Delights Futsal Challenge at the Cebu Coliseum yesterday.

The Carolinians waxed hot early with Solon scoring back-to-back goals as early as the second and the third minutes, while Ivy Bungcasan and Elaine Macasero found the net at the 10th and 11th minutes to erect a 4-0 lead going into the final half.

While USC displayed a well-oiled game, Don Bosco struggled on both ends.

“The girls felt pressured. They were tentative and when they got their game back, the margin was too huge to overcome,” said DBC coach Bro. Mari Aberrasturi. “USC played very well and I can’t take that away from them.”

Coach Dexter Arrojado’s girls did not lose composure when DBC started to regain poise in the second half.

With Doris Toledo guarding the goal well, it took a big effort from Honey Thomson to get the ball past the USC keeper at the 22nd mark. But Bungcasan and Solon retaliated on the 29th and 30th while gymnast-turned football player Claudith Lapeña rammed the ball in on the 33rd for a 6-2 count.

DBC could have inched close, but missed chances by Melissa Rafanan and Thomson on separate penalty kicks did not help their cause.

Solon scored her fourth goal on the 39th and Thomson booted the final goal at the 40th.

MLSDF Executive Director Eddie Ybañez is now calling for more teams to join the second tournament exclusive for ladies only early next year. (RCM)
