Salazar College claims first victory in Aspirant division

SALAZAR College of Science and Information Technology logged the first win in the hotly-contested Aspirant division after surviving St. Alfonsus Catholic School (SACS), 74-70, in the 2nd ML Kwarta Padala Developmental Basketball Tournament “Christmas Jam” at the Cebu Coliseum yesterday.

Meanwhile, Don Bosco Technology Center scored twin wins in the 14-Under and 12-Under categories.

DBTC’s Mini team proved too much for SACS following a 78-29 drubbing, while DBTC’s Midget squad lorded it over the University of Southern Philippines-Foundation with an 82-51 victory.

Personal playground

SC-SIT started strong behind Romel John Lawas, who scored eight of the team’s 18 points in the first quarter. The Skyblazers continued to dominate as lanky center Ong made the shaded lane his personal playground, scoring 10 of the team’s 15 second-quarter output to give SC-SIT a 33-27 lead at the bend.

However, SACS suddenly found the right combination in the third period with Ouano and Catalan leading the way. Ouano scored 15 and Catalan had eight as SACS outscored SC-SIT in the period, 27-20, to erect a slim 54-53 lead entering the final canto.

After a trade of baskets in the fourth, SC-SIT established control behind Ong and Jun-Jun Violango.

SC-SIT’s inside game was given a tough time by SACS’ outside scoring led by Fernandez and Echavez.

Meanwhile, DBTC manhandled the shorter SACS quintet all the way in the Mini cluster, while DBTC’s Midget team similarly broke the game wide-open in the third period to nab a cakewalk over USP-F, 21-6. DBTC led at 39-30 at the half and later turned to a 60-36 edge going into the final period.
