USJ-R booters survive tough game

THE veterans know all the moves, but sadly they also know all the dirty tricks.

Fifa referee Randy Estremos sent out one player as the University of San Jose-Recoletos survived a rough Queen City United squad, 1-1, in yesterday’s 8th Aboitiz Men’s Open Cup at the University of San Carlos - Technological Center field.

In the second game, Cardex ran the Metropolitan FC to the ground with a 7-1 win to take the top spot in the Group B with a perfect 3-0 record.

Yellow card

Queen City started the match on a hard mode and Anthony Trinidad got a yellow in the third minute, while Jicwic Caballero followed suit in the 14th.

After Robert Nicart collided with the keeper in a chase for a high ball in the 30th, things turned rougher. Richard Montayre got his yellow in the 34th, while Caballero got his second yellow in the 41st and was booted out as both teams fought to a scoreless draw.

A contrite Caballero was busy apologizing to his teammates during the halftime break.

“Both players were looking at the ball, there was no intention on his (Nicart) part to hit the keeper, so there was no foul,” Estremos said.

A defensive error in the 57th allowed Queen City, ironically coached by the cool-headed Mario Ceniza, to take a 1-0 lead courtesy of Adrian Caballero.

Being a goal down seemed to have rejuvenated USJ-R as it began pushing up the Queen City court, while the tired defense struggled to keep chase.

Robert Nicart sent a wicked 20 yarder from left that bounced off the keeper and Jonathan Sollo banged in the rebound to level the match in the 89th minute.

In the second game, Harold Buot got past the defense as early as the second to put Cardex on top while Voltaire Montebon added another for a quick 2-0 lead barely 10 minutes into the match. ML

With only eight men suiting up, Metropolitan could barely keep pace as Buot scored another in the 22nd en route to the easy win.
