Costanilla: Choreographers gripe about Sinulog stops By Sam Costanilla Spotlight
SUCCESSFUL. It was a successful launching of Paskong Pinoy, Pusong Pinoy last Dec. 10 at the lagoon area of Ayala Center Cebu (ACC). Tourism Sec. Ace Durano led other dignitaries in lighting the 42-foot Christmas tree that was set up by Globe Telecom and Cebu Holdings, Inc.
Some of the local school-based dance troupes and carolers came in colorful costumes and did cultural festivals and Christmas selections, all in Cebuano. It was another Junjet Primor-directed presentation, so it was not surprising to see a spectacular and fabulous production. Primor is truly incomparable when it comes to directing shows of this kind.

YEARLY. The Paskong Pinoy, Pusong Pinoy launching was not done for mere public show. Its proceeds will go to the city’s streetchildren, as well as the victims of the two typhoons that hit Luzon. You see, every weekend, there will be shows at the lagoon area of ACC. There are also food stalls and product booths there that sell native delicacies and products for the general public to buy. That’s where the proceeds will be of important use for the intended beneficiaries. Who was it that said, “It’s better to give than to receive”? At any rate, I suggested to co-emcee Maryrose Maghuyop and Primor that such an activity should be institutionalized as a yearly event.
Hopefully, the Dept. of Tourism will again spearhead the program. If sustained as an annual attraction, I’m sure Paskong Pinoy, Pusong Pinoy will develop into another spectacular festival just like the Sinulog.

OPPOSE. What’s this I heard that all local choreographers are strongly opposed to the idea of seven judging stops in areas where their Sinulog contingents are to perform prior to their main presentation inside the Cebu City Sports Complex on Jan. 16 next year? According to them, the idea is impractical and a lot of hassle to the dancers as they will be using large props. The choreographers also said that if their Sinulog dancers are to perform seven times on the streets, all of them will already run out of energy and stamina once they get inside the sports complex for the main competition. I think the best way to resolve this issue is for the choreographers to openly express their stand or opposition to the idea. They should set a meeting with the Sinulog organizers as early as now because time is running out and the festival is just a month away. All of them should come to the table of understanding and agree to stage a unified Sinulog format. They should not allow personal biases to prevail, considering that next year’s Sinulog festival will be on its silver presentation. It calls for a grand celebration but the effort will surely fail if all kinks are not ironed out immediately.
By the way, when we talk of Sinulog, we should also give credit to one person whose leadership had made everything happen, the guy who actually started it all. He is former Customs Collector David “Kuya Boy” Odilao, Jr., the Father of Sinulog. If it were not for him and his bright idea, Sinulog would not have been born.

ANNIVERSARY. My good friend Jun Esma of Philamlife-Esma Agency is happy to announce that Shadonne and Extremes, two of Cebu’s top show bands, are performing tonight at Café Orchidia’s The Patio on Nivel Hills in Lahug as his agency marks its third anniversary today. It is also his agency’s Christmas party. By the way, the two bands will also perform on two separate occasions at Plaza Independencia as part of the Kasadya sa Plaza variety show organized by the Cebu city government. Yours truly is the show coordinator and emcee. The Extremes will perform on Dec. 28 and Shadonne on Dec. 29. The Kasadya sa Plaza is open to the public.

CAPITOL. Tomorrow, Thursday, all roads lead to the Capitol grounds where Gov. Gwen Garcia and other local officials will officially and formally declare Pasko.
BOYFRIEND. This local commentator is not happy over the fact that his daughter is having a romantic link with a fellow radioman. The radioman was earlier charged in a wife-battering case.
