Capitol simplifies Christmas activities
By Minerva B. Gerodias

BECAUSE of the failure to pass the 2004 budget, Capitol decided to cut the number of activities it will hold in preparation for Christmas.

Capitol initially planned to hold a weeklong celebration starting this Friday but some of the activities were cancelled.

The Provincial Govern-ment’s Christmas festivities were supposed to start on Dec. 16 and culminate on Dec. 23 with the Garbo sa Sugbo awarding.

But what will push through will only be the opening activities on Dec. 16, Capitol employees Christmas party on Dec. 17 and the Daygon Festival on the 22nd.

The Garbo sa Sugbo awarding will also be held together with the Daygon contest.

Awardees

Among the awardees are Sheryn Regis and Raki Vega, local singers who made it to national stardom; Karla Bautista, the Cebuana beauty queen who made it to the top five in the Miss World competition, and Bobby Nalzaro of GMA 7 Cebu, who was named Outstanding Public Affairs Program Host beating multi-awarded TV journalist Korina Sanchez.

Other awardees are Miguel Antonio Garcia, who won in a quiz ball in Brunei; Duke Bajenting, who topped in an accountancy exam; Rudolph Gomez, who won a piano competition abroad; the Mandaue School for the Arts; and the CFI Cooperative.

“In light of the austerity measures, it is the call of the hour and especially in light of the fact that our employees will not be receiving their Christmas bonuses, it would be in better taste to cancel these festivities and to celebrate Christmas in a very simple manner and would also give the Province some savings. Mura man gud ug dili in good taste that our employees will not be receiving their bonuses and we will have festival every night,” Capitol consultant Pablo John Garcia said, while admitting that the failure to pass the 2004 budget is the reason for the cancellation of some activities.

Capitol’s employees’ association president Diosdado Cayme said they will be holding a big rally on Monday if until this Friday, they will not get a favorable word about their bonuses.

Bonuses

He added that they have not received a total of P35,000 in bonuses because of the failure to pass the 2004 budget. These are the anniversary bonus (P3,000), collective negotiating agreement bonus (P12,000), extra bonus (P15,000) and cash gift (P5,000).

Cayme is also scheduled to go to Manila soon and will bring up the matter to the President if after their rally they will still not get their bonuses.
