Security for dawn masses
By Rene H. Martel

To beef up its intelligence network, the Cebu City Government tapped the Parish Security Group (PSG) of the city’s parishes to secure churches beginning tomorrow, the start of the Christmas dawn masses.

PSG officers from at least 15 parishes attended an emergency meeting yesterday with City Hall representatives to discuss the security measures for churches.

Phillip Zapra, PSG coordinator, said the group will keep an eye on threats to security in churches.

Instead of just supervising traffic, PSG members will monitor suspicious-looking persons and packages in churches.

Security plans are set for tomorrow’s dawn mass, with the PSG officials promising to do their part.

Zapra said the PSG, whose federation officials were sworn into office last October, has Vice Mayor Michael Rama and City Councilor Procopio Fernandez as advisers.

Rama heads the Police Coordinating and Advisory Council while Fernandez is chairman of the council committee on police, fire and penology.

In another development, the City Government beefed up its security with policemen and Special Weapons and Tactics members.

The move was a response to the nationwide red alert raised by the PNP, following last Sunday’s bombing in General Santos City, which claimed the lives of at least 15 persons.

Civil Service Unit chief Marino Rodriguez Jr. said in an interview the policemen will complement the security guards, who are tasked to frisk and inspect the bags of those who enter City Hall.
