Tortillos backslide

Granny Goose Tortillos’ campaign may be in danger as victory remained elusive for the Snackmasters after losing to Welcoat Paints, 65-75, in the PBL Open Championship at the Makati Coliseum yesterday.

Meanwhile, Mark Cardona and Jun-Jun Cabatu teamed up to thwart Emerson Oreta’s desperate drive in the waning seconds, as ICTSI-La Salle pulled off a nerve-wracking 77-76 win over archrival AMP-Ateneo in the second game.

This time, early foul trouble was the main reason of the Snackmasters fourth straight defeat in the second round of elimination.

The 6-foot-5 Marvin Ortiguerra tallied 22 points on top of five rebounds and an assist to lead Welcoat’s victory.

With Joseph Ronald Quiñahan picking his third foul early in the second quarter, the Snacksmasters found its game plummet after a tough first quarter.

Lone field goal

For nearly six minutes, Granny Goose made only one field goal and its defense loosened, allowing the Paint Masters to pile points with Ortiguerra and Fil-Am Anthony Washington wrecking havoc in the paint to move Welcoat ahead, 42-31, at the bend.

The Paint Masters continued to display a fiery game to erect a 50-32 lead while the Snacks Masters continued to struggle offensively.

Things got better for Granny Goose in the fourth when Quiñahan and Toti Almeda sparked the offense to cut the lead to 52-61, but the unsportsmanlike foul slapped against Quiñahan brought doom for the Snackmasters in the endgame.

Quiñahan topped Granny Goose with 14 points, while also grabbing five rebounds.
