Grand slam

General feeds Mega Mix played the best game of the conference and got rewarded with the league’s first-ever grand-slam title.

The defending champion Feeds Masters withered the defense of the guest team Lactovitale Probiotics to score a 91-77 Game 3 win and wrap up the Cebu Basketball Federation (CBF) Commissioner’s Cup best-of-three finals series.

The victory at the Don Celestino Martinez Sports Complex in Bogo, Cebu, capped a sweep of all three CBF titles this season by the Feeds Masters, who also won the season-opening President’s Cup in March over Hapee and the Summer League also over Hapee in May.

Deserving

“The team deserves to win the grand-slam title because we had the all-out support of team owners Albert Tan and his wife Kitty,” said Gen. Feeds coach Titing Manalili. “The boys also played well and executed our game plan well that’s why we broke the game open in the final five minutes of the game.”

The title was also the GMC-owned franchise’s fifth and Manalili’s second in the league, which started in 2002.

Manalili also won the same title in December of 2002, while he was still calling the shots for Grachiya Energy Boosters.

“It was a huge defensive adjustment for our part. I had to devise a plan to limit the production of Francis Sanz and Gilbert Castillo,” said Manalili. “I also put Mark Ababon on Ronaldo Bucao.

When they collapsed in the last five minutes of the game, I knew we were going to win the title.”

UV did me in

The Probiotics were hot on the tail most of the Feeds Masters before Sanz was pulled out of the game for good due to foot injury.

“Ironically, it was my players in UV who did me in. Ababon and Jayford Rodriguez gave me headaches as they led Gen. Feeds to victory,” said Lactovitale coach Elmer “Boy” Cabahug, also the head coach of the University of the Visayas. “But I am also happy for them as they proved that they can be forces to reckon with even outside my call.”

The Feeds Masters also clipped the scoring prowess of Richard Ian Saladaga, who failed to impress the people of Bogo, his hometown.

Saladaga, however, was named Most Valuable Player of the Commissioner’s Cup.

General Feeds (91) – Caputolan 18, Ababon 12, Magsumbol 12, Ursal 11, Celiz 11, Rodriguez 11, Paraiso 11, Balague 5. Lactovitale (77) – Castillo 25, Elim 17, Cainglet 11, Saladaga 9, Sevilla 6, Sanz 4, Almacin 3, Akad 3, Galinato 2, Bucao 2. Quarterscores: 26-23; 46-41; 71-67; 91-77.
