Garbo sa Sugbu award, an inspiration to do good

On the 11th day before Christmas . . . No, my true love did not send me 11 pipers piping or something like that, as the famous Christmas song goes. As most, if not all, of us know, that day marked the demise of one of the greatest pillars of the Philippine movie industry.

In fact, he was called Da King for being the film industry’s undisputed king, a title he held for many, many years up to the time of his death. Many attempted to wrest off the crown from his head and snatch his throne, but all these attempts proved futile as people continued to patronize his movies and look up to him as their idol and hero.

Many contenders were given the title “prince” but their stars lost their glitter even before they could get close to the throne they had been aiming for.

Fernando Poe Jr., an icon in the movie industry, suddenly left a void that no one can ever fill or if ever there will be somebody who can fill that void, it will perhaps take many years before that day will come.

His first and last try at politics for the highest office of the land was unsuccessful though many of his supporters (and he himself) believe otherwise.

At the time of his death, some of these supporters have expressed their desire to continue the fight in the Electoral Tribunal for and in the name of their deceased idol.

Though I do not consider myself an avid fan of Da King, I had seen many of his movies, some with the most stellar female actresses in the local industry as leading ladies. Of my first time inside a movie house, when I was still in grade school, I still remember that it was an FPJ film (though the title escapes my memory now) with no less than the movie queen herself (who eventually became his wife), Susan Roces, as his leading lady.

Though controversies hounded their marital life, as most show biz unions are wont to be, the marriage of Da King and the movie queen proved to be very strong. Theirs was one of the very few unions in show business that remained intact through the years.

Though there are talks about his temper and other bad sides of the man, many also attest to his generosity and goodness. Whichever side you may be, it would perhaps be a sign of generosity on our part to just remember that once there was a man who gave hope to the local film industry to survive and remain alive all these years.
May FPJ rest in peace.

Attention alumni of St. Mary’s Academy in Oslob, Cebu. There will be a grand homecoming on Sun., Dec. 26. Batch ‘72 is spearheading the celebration.

The whole-day event will start with a holy mass in the morning, followed by a parade around the town proper. The culmination is a fellowship party in the evening that has a retro dance contest among all batches.

For those who are still undecided, you only have two days more to make up your minds. Hurry! Don’t miss the fun and the bonding or you’ll miss a big percentage of your life.

After having postponed it once, the Cebu Provincial Government will finally make good its plan to honor and acknowledge some people and establishments within its fold that have excelled in their respective endeavors.

This is one of the highlights of the Garbo sa Sugbu - Pasko sa Kapitolyo celebration. The awarding is set tomorrow, Dec. 22, at the Capitol Social Hall.

Some of the awardees are Star In A Million and Voice of Asia runner-up Sheryn Regis, the Ultimate Born Diva Raki Vega, 2004 Bb. Pilipinas-World and Continental Queen of Asia 2004 Ma. Karla Bautista, broadcaster Bobby Nalzaro, pianist Rudolf Golez, quiz wiz Miguel Antonio Garcia, the Mandaue School of Arts and the CFI Cooperative, among others.

May this inspire others to also do their best in their respective fields. To the awardees, congratulations and may your tribe increase!

As of this writing, a few entries to the street décor contest, in connection with the Pasko sa Sugbo celebration, have already been put up. The decors are definitely eye-catching works of art.

Hopefully, many others have already sprouted in different parts of the city as the deadline for putting up the entries has come to a close. May all these external manifestations of our internal joy help achieve its purpose in spreading joy and hope this Christmas season.

Merry Christmas everyone!
