Prohhorov: Countdown and count off
By Gina Prohhorov
Great potentials

Well, this week must really be shopping time. It is just a few days before Christmas. No one can stop this gift-giving season. Though everybody complains about the rising prices, yet you see that malls are full-packed.

Filipinos love Christmas, so no matter what, the spirit of sharing is there. Besides, kids who do not understand the economic crisis must be spared from harsh realities.

But what parents can do is choose the gifts that they would give to the kids so these can be long lasting, useful and educational.

It would be wise to take time to think over what possible gifts you can give to each of your children. You know their needs. You know their wants but you can guide them on the priorities. Going to the malls with your list could be a big help so you know which section to go to.

If the budget is limited, then it will definitely be a choice between a Spiderman toy or a storybook. If you want your kid to learn more vocabulary and improve his reading comprehension, perhaps a book would be better.

For a girl, is it a Barbie doll or a journal where she would learn to scribble her thoughts and plans for the day? Learning to write is something valuable for kids to learn because it entails the use of their imagination and creativity.

I hope you avoid buying the usual stuff even for adults. You know, the box of hankies, socks, picture frames and photo albums. These are all the mechanical items you just put in the cart.

Make a difference this time for each loved one in your list.

Avoid the packed items you see while lining up to the cashier. Don’t forget a lot of people need Bibles, or prayer books or spirit- lifting books on how to’s.

These items may sound boring now but the moment that loved one is feeling down, he may not want to talk to anyone but may only reach out for one of these books. Then, you made a difference!
