No plates to spell trouble for drivers
THE Cebu City Council yesterday called the attention of law enforcers after noticing that many vehicles, especially motorcycles, do not have plate numbers.
It asked the Philippine National Police (PNP), Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) and Land Transportation Office (LTO) 7 to again focus on their task of running after such vehicles.
Association of Barangay Councils president and ex-officio member Eugenio Faelnar first raised the matter in a resolution he proposed.
At first, Faelnar only had in mind the motorcycles after noting crimes committed by perpetrators riding motorcycles recently became “prevalent.”
Criminals’ favorite
He said running after these robbers is difficult because of the motorcycles’ maneuverability.
Motorcycles are also able to negotiate traffic because these can go through narrow passages.
And in most robbery cases, the motorcycles used as getaway vehicles do not have genuine license plates.
Yesterday, Faelnar asked the PNP, Citom, and LTO to intercept motorcycles with no plate numbers or those with unofficial and modified license plates.
Authorities, he said, should also inspect the registration documents of the motorcycles and frisk the driver and his riders.
That way, authorities might be able to foil robberies. Robbers usually use unmarked motorcycles with tampered licensed plates.
All encompassing
Before the resolution was approved, Councilor Hilario Davide III requested that instead of just motorcycles, concerned government agencies should go after all vehicles without the required license plates.
Councilor Raul Alcoseba, chairman of the committee on traffic management, said the matter could be brought to attention of the three offices, which are all members of the Citom board.
Councilor Rodrigo Abe-llanosa, on the other hand, lamented that despite the presence of traffic enforcers in the streets, vehicles without license plates abound because the said enforcers do not do their job.
“Maybe, it’s time we start apprehending Citom (enforcers) who neglect the enforcement of traffic laws,” he said. (RHM)
