Chiongbian: Playing golf on Christmas day
By Edgar R. Chiongbian
Teetime

MERRY Christmas to everyone! Christmas this year falls on a Saturday, which is a golfing day. So while everybody at the house is preoccupied with the presents you gave or didn’t give, go get some
sun and a round of golf. I am sure the rest of the gang will be there too.

The Presidents Cup golf tournament at CCC went very well as usual. The two-day, 2-man team play format, which is a combination of the team’s aggregate net score for the first day and a scramble the next day, has proven many things to the club.

Only on its third year and this format has finally answered a very much sought-after question. Who is the better golfer, the low handicapper or the high handicapper? The answer we can tell you now are the high handicappers based on the results.

On the first day, all the scores were tallied and ranked and thereafter divided into three divisions. In reviewing the handicaps listed in Division I, the list was solidly made up of golfers in the Class C and D category with some Class A players hanging on.

Division II was mostly Class B golfers and in Division III were definitely some Class A players. And the results for the next-day scramble will reveal the competitiveness of the players. The results are as follows with the handicaps in parenthesis.

Overall champions Serge Romero (21) and Joe Palma (23). Division I champions Gil Alvarez (18) and Billy Tan (18). First runners-up Peter Dy (20) and Glen Sebastian 913) and second runners-up Bobit Avila (11) and Vic Yuvallos (11).

Division II champions Ben Gothong (16) and Calvin Gothong (14), first runners-up Wendell Yap and Mike Jo, and second runners-up Willy Lim and Vicente Go. Division II champions Jimmy Sy (14) and Danny Deen (15). At first runner-up were Mike Libi (30) and Johnny Siao (19), and at second runners-up were Carl Almario (2) and Bebot Baldemor (10). Guest Division champions were Bobot Ngo and Allan Lua and the runners-up were Hannah Palanca and Choi Ramos.

Okay, we got to see the marshal driving around a bit in the morning and then he settled down in the cool shade, while everyone was fighting hard to get their game done. Many reported that he was under a shade tree for 45 minutes where there was nobody around. Somewhere in the vicinity of the second hole, fifth hole and the sixth hole. And I asked, “How did you know he was the marshal?” Because he was using a golf cart with a bubble light on the roof like a foolishman, they replied in chorus.

Congratulations to the winners of the Federation of Senior Christmas golf tournament at Alta Vista. Overall champion was Vicente Go with a gross 74 strokes. Young Senior champion Samuel Dunque, first runner-up Alejandro Ngo and second runner-up Manuel Go.

Winning the Mature Seniors title was “Amo” Albino Gothong with a super duper score of net 57. At first runner-up was Braulio Caoili and second runner-up Jinichi Tanaka. Super Seniors champion was Marcial Capitan, John Uy at first runner-up and Greg Gepitulan second runner-up.

GOLF TIP: There is such a thing as reverse logic in golf. I am sure that you have experienced that the more you aim to the left of the fairway or hole, the more your ball “slices” to the right. Or the more you aim right, the more the ball hooks to the left. This is because your mind tries to compensate for the wrong stance or play, which consequently alters your swing. To overcome this you have to concentrate more on your target rather than your swing.

Reverse logic can also be the reason why you are having problem with hitting the ball solidly. If you are topping the ball, try moving away from the ball instead of stepping closer. For fat shots, try moving closer instead of stepping away from the ball. Remember that this is only a quick fix and the problem could be in your swing or posture.
