Sepulveda, Tabada bag titles

VICTOR Sepulveda and Jobannie Tabada secured the top plums in the twin tournaments of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (Cepca) at the Handuraw Learning and Leisure Café last Sunday.

Tabada defeated Dante Arguelles in the championship match to win first prize in the year-ender Cepca Grand Finals Tournament, which featured champions of the monthly Cepca tournaments.

Sepulveda defeated Danny Pestaño in the final round to take the Cepca December Tournament, which was open to all non-finalists.

Arguelles finished first runner-up, while Magi Dionson defeated Mandy Baria in the match for third. In the match-up for fifth place, Joe Atillo outplayed Jerry Rallos.

Twelve finalists qualified in the year-end tournament after topping various monthly Cepca chess tournaments this year. Tabada was the November champion.

Meanwhile, Sepulveda finished with an unblemished score of five points in the five-round Swiss system non-qualifiers tournament. Bong San Pascual defeated Norwegian guest player Roar Sorensen to score 3.5 points and bag second place.

Third place went to Cepca president Jun Olis.

After the tournament, the Cepca members and their family held their Christmas party. (ML)
