Japanese biz sentiment in East Asia declines
THE Japan External Trade Organization’s (Jetro) monthly survey of Japanese companies and affiliates operating in 12 countries/regions of East Asia showed that overall business sentiment declined for the fifth straight month in December, with the exception of North and South China.
Sentiment concerning the next two to three months was down in every location, signaling the growing uncertainty among Japanese businesses over future prospects in the region.
Jetro polls the companies to measure year-on-year changes, expressed as diffusion indices, in their business outlooks for the current month and the next two to three months.
Among the five Asean countries included in this survey, current business sentiment declined in every country in December (over the previous month), with the overall current diffusion index falling for the fourth straight month.
In China and North Asia, current business sentiment was lower than last month in all locations except North and South China.
The current diffusion index (DI) for the Republic of Korea crept into negative territory for the first time in 10 months.
The DI outlook for two or three months ahead also fell in all countries. It dropped into negative figures in Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines.
Negative figures mean more people were pessimistic than optimistic about the prospects ahead.
