Imports tapped By Rommel C. Manlosa Sun.Star Staff Reporter
An exciting pre-season tournament is expected to usher in the second season of the United Regional Basketball League (URBL).
The URBL Sinulog Cup slated to start Jan. 23 at the Cebu Coliseum will feature imports and foreign teams battling it out for the title in a weeklong competition.
A South Korean collegiate selection and the Chinese-Taipei National Team have confirmed to play against the five pioneer teams of the league, led by first season champion M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City.
Other teams to see action are Lactovitale Probiotics-Cebu Province, Ilocos Sur Snipers, Quezon Province and Harbour Centre-Pampanga, which will all be parading imports.
“This is an open tournament, which means each of the five URBL teams are allowed to hire of a maximum of two imports,” said commissioner Ramon Fernandez, who is now negotiating for expansion teams to join the league in the second season, which will start in March.
“We will only allow eight teams next season. We will not hurry everything,” said Fernandez. “As of now we have received too many applications, but we are going to base our decision on whether they can sustain operations for at least three years.”
