Which team will get its Christmas wish?

IF THE Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) has its own dear Santa, he could have been in a tight fix right now as he faces complicating Christmas wishes, which can’t all be granted.

Just consider Talk N’ Text and Shell, which are both hoping to be gifted the second outright semifinal seat in the Gran Matador PBA Philippine Cup.

And there’s San Miguel Beer, Purefoods and Alaska, which have Christmas socks all after the No.4 slot and the twice-to-beat incentive in the wildcard playoffs.

For No.9

There’s also Coca-Cola, FedEx and Sta. Lucia Realty, all wishing to stay clear of the No.9 spot to avoid a twice-to-win task in the next phase.

The picture in these muddled battles only becomes clearer as the tournament resumes with the final playdate in the double-round classifications on Jan. 5 at the Philsports Arena, pitting the Tigers versus the Express and the Aces against the Realtors.

Barangay Ginebra is safe at No.1 with a closing 13-5 win-loss card that gave the team early passage into the semifinal round. Red Bull has also seen its destiny, landing 10th in the elims, which means it has two win twice in the wildcard phase to advance in the quarters.

Other complications

Still, complications abound from the second to ninth spots of the standings. In fact, the Talk N’ Text-Shell playoff for the No.2 slot has been set on Jan. 7 with an accompanying playoff for the No.4 spot a possibility depending on the outcome of the Alaska-Sta. Lucia tiff.

If Alaska wins, the Aces will end up tied with the Beermen and the Hotdogs at 9-9. In this case, the Beer-men and the Aces figure in the playoff because Pure-foods will wind up third due to superior quotient.

Meanwhile, Coca-Cola automatically clinches seventh spot if it beats FedEx. (PBA media bureau)
