Dismissal awaits cops who fire guns on Dec. 31
THE Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 has called on other law enforcement agencies and all licensed gunholders to refrain from firing their guns on New Year’s Eve.
On the part of the PRO 7, Senior Supt. Ronald Roderos assured that all policemen in Central Visayas have been sternly warned not to fire their service firearms indiscriminately, or they’ll face dismissal from service.
Prevention
“We extend our appeal to non-PNP personnel such as the military and the National Bureau of Investigation, as well as the private gunholders, not to fire their guns. This is to prevent similar incidents in the past wherein some innocent civilians were hit by stray bullets,” he said.
Roderos expressed hope that other law enforcement agencies will issue similar reminders to their personnel.
Tomorrow, Roderos said all police chiefs in Region 7 are required to inspect the issued guns of their men.
Masking tape will be placed on the muzzle of their men’s firearms.
Next-day inspection
The tape will bear the signatures of the policemen’s immediate superiors and will serve as a “tamper-proof seal,” said Roderos.
The taped guns will be inspected again the next day, he added.
During the stint of former PRO 7 chief Avelino Razon, police personnel were required to bring a whistle to warn offenders of the presence of lawmen, instead of firing their guns.
The PNP noted the decrease in the number of victims of stray bullets after Camp Crame strictly enforced the ban on indiscriminate firing of guns to greet the New Year. (GC)
