Job skills sought By Jeanette P. Malinao Sun.Star Staff Reporter
Although over 40,000 workers in the region got jobs this year, the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) 7 said many jobseekers are not qualified for the jobs they want.
Dole 7 records show that a total of 67,895 jobs were solicited this year, but only 43,294 were hired as of November.
Grace Diaz of Dole 7’s employment promotions division said many information technology (IT) graduates lack the skills needed by IT companies.
Majority of the graduates are also not proficient in English so they could not qualify in call centers.
Many also fail in written and oral examinations when they apply for work abroad and locally.
Diaz said workers also have difficulty in proper pronunciation and in expressing themselves in English.
Call centers
Education Secretary Florencio Abad earlier lamented that only five percent of applicants for call centers get hired.
The Department of Education is now promoting information and communications technology in basic education, to prepare the country’s future workforce for the demands in the IT industry worldwide.
This is also to support President Arroyo’s aim for the country to supply half of the employees needed by IT companies all over the world.
Job hunt on
Dole 7 still continues its employment initiatives and has conducted 23 job fairs this year alone.
Dole 7 Director Rodolfo Sabulao is grateful for the help of local government units and the private sector in organizing fairs for local and overseas employment.
Diaz said about 35,888 workers got regular employment and the others got temporary jobs under the Special Program for the Employment of Students and the Work Appreciation Program of the government.
The workers were employed for three to five months and received at least 75 percent of the salary of regular employees.
Dole 7 also has programs for retrenched workers, returning overseas workers and workers in the rural areas through entrepreneurship.
