Mambaling fire wipes out P.6M in factory goods
A SHELLCRAFT factory warehouse in Tabada, Mambaling in Cebu City was razed by fire yesterday noon, causing workers to worry about their jobs barely 12 hours before the beginning of the new year.
When firefighters had the blaze under control after 16 minutes, only the concrete wall of the single-story warehouse of Alcon Industries, which exports shellcraft, was left.
Factory workers believed the fire was caused by a short circuit as it began in the main electric switch.
Those who were inside the building noticed sparks in a corner of the warehouse where the main switch was installed. In less than two minutes, there were flames.
No injury or casualty was reported, but the fire bureau placed the cost of damage at P600,000. Some of the workers have been employed with the factory, owned by David and Conchita Tan, for 15 years.
Chemicals
The Cebu City Fire Department received the alarm at 12:48 p.m.
Fire Marshal Esmael Codilla said chemicals stored inside the building made it difficult for firefighters to control the blaze.
At 12:54 p.m., the fire department raised a second alarm, which obligated all fire stations in the city to respond.
The concrete wall around the warehouse, however, prevented the fire from spreading, which could have caused further damage in a community crammed with houses. (AIV)
