Caslib seeks repeat of 1991 feat in Seag By Mike T. Limpag Sun.Star Correspondent
Nationa coach Aries Caslib is aiming for a repeat of the 1991 Southeast Asian Games in this year’s edition.
Fourteen years ago, the Philippine team scored its biggest achievement after making the semifinal round with 1-0 win over Malaysia and a 2-2 draw with Vietnam for their first and only semifinal appearance in the biennial games.
However, in the crossover semis, the Philippines lost, 6-2, to Thailand and 2-0 to Singapore for the bronze.
Asked whether he is aiming for a medal in this year’s football event, which will be played in football-manic Bacolod, Caslib, the youngest national coach in the 2004 Tiger Cup, gave a modest target.
“Semifinals first,” the 36-year-old Caslib told Sun.Star Cebu in a text message.
That semifinal spot was the lone bright note in the recent years of Philippine football history. But with its relative success in the just-concluded Tiger Cup, a semifinal spot maybe a doable target.
This year’s team currently has six-footer Ali Borromeo up front and the young Michael Casas at goal. Borromeo’s deft touch set up Emilio Caligdong’s lone goal that gave the Philippines a brief 1-0 lead over Thailand in its last game.
Caligdong also scored two goals in a 2-1 win over Myanmar and is still eligible to play in the SEA Games.
After a brief rest, Caslib will prepare the team for an under-23 tournament in Brunei.
