Serna: Art exhibits add color to the Sinulog By Roger Serna Sounds & images
Pit Senyor! Happy Sinulog! Yes, these words and phrases, associated with the feast of the Sr. Sto. Niño and the celebration of the 25th year of the Sinulog grand parade, are what you’ll hear in almost all nooks and crannies around the metropolis these days.
You’ll hear drum beats, blares of bugles, trumpets and similar instruments depicting the happy mood of the Cebuanos and guests alike. Aside from being the silver anniversary of the Sinulog, this year’s celebration is expected to attract more people than ever before in spite of the crises, disasters and calamities (both natural and man - or woman-made, however you want to perceive them) that the country has undergone and those experienced by our Asian neighbors.
Based on studies and observations, experts say that during trying times the faithful and believers find no one else to turn to both for petitions and thanksgiving than the Supreme Being we fondly call as God.
So, together with whatever are in the hearts and minds of these people, allow me to voice out my own petition in the two famous words that sum up everything that’s inside us and which we direct to the Holy Child: Pit Senyor!

The annual Sto. Niño Exhibit at the Ayala Center Cebu formally opened last Friday, Jan. 7, with a Eucharistic celebration followed by the ribbon cutting ceremony. The exhibit is at the Exhibit Area 2, at the second level of the mall.
This year’s theme is Sto. Niño Celebrating and Contemplating the Eucharist with Mary. Include this in your itinerary. You may not just find it pleasing to the senses, it could also prove to be spiritually uplifting and emotionally fulfilling.

A painting exhibit, dubbed Through The Eyes of Hope, opened last weekend and features the artworks of Galicano, Dela Cerna, Impas, Alcoseba, Deguilmo, Pepito, Yap, Lao, Abellana and Carabio. The exhibit is at the Paseo Ciudad, on the ground floor of Ayala Center Cebu and will run till the 23rd.
Meanwhile, an art exhibit for a cause, called Katahum, Komrad, featuring Russian artist Natalya Ogneva and Cebuano painters Gabriel Abellana, Adeste Deguilmo, Sofronio dela Cerna, Siegfredo Galen, Luther Galicano, Jun Impas, Jorge Lao, Maxcel Migallos, Kimsoy Yap and Celso Pepito, is ongoing at the SM City Cebu Art Center and will run till the 18th.
I had viewed this already a day after it opened and have been inspired to . . . hmmm . . . start my own artworks. Ha-ha! One of these days . . . hopefully.

As I mentioned last Tuesday, tomorrow, Canada-based soprano Lilac Caña will be at the SM City Cebu Cinema One for a show which will usher in the annual holding of Handumanan.
Caña has been trained by well-known music professors in established music schools abroad. She has also performed with established performers in various big-budgeted productions.
Although she has performed in some parts of the country in 2003 in what is called as a teaching tour, and with Asia’s Queen of Songs Pilita Corrales that same year, this is her first major show in Cebu.
Future outings of Handumanan will feature singers who trace their roots to Cebu. They could be based here, there or everywhere, rather, in other places inside or outside the country.
As of the moment, even before the actual staging of the maiden offering, the organizers are already preparing the shortlist of artists for next year’s edition.
