Eco-Tech ’94 trips Macias 2001 in OT

DEFENDING champion Eco-Tech ’94 wasn’t expecting a rough ride but nonetheless had a good start after nipping the stubborn Macias Electronics 2001, 75-72, in overtime in the Cecaba-7th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Memorial Cup yesterday at the City Sports Club-Cebu Gym.
Eco-Tech withered a spirited resistance by the younger squad behind the dreaded one-two punch of reigning MVP Wellington Yu and last season’s Finals MVP Anwar Satina, who combined for 52 points.
Satina topped the scoring with 27 points on top of nine rebounds, six assists and four steals, while Yu finished with 25 points and 15 rebounds, including seven points in overtime.
Class ’94 trailed by six after the first period, 14-20, before taking the lead at the half, 33-30, following a 19-10 second-quarter scoring. A toe-to-toe battle ensued in the final half, resulting to a 65-all deadlock at the end of regulation.
But Echo Tech turned on the heat in the extension, pulling away to take its first win in and jumpstart its title defense.
Paul Martin Gabatan topped the losing squad with 26 points on a 12-of-20 shooting, while Noel Liao had 12, and Eric Cabana and Ryan Racal finished with 11 and 10, respectively.
Meanwhile, Cokaliong Shipping Lines Inc. 2004 won its first-ever game in the Cecaba effortlessly after Eastway Racing Co. 2003 failed to show up for the game.
