Garcia tandem sets pace

Ramonito and Richie Garcia took the lead after Day 1 of the 24th Coral Invitational Golf Tournament at the Cebu Country Club yesterday.

Richie scored the day’s best 43 points, while Ramontito had a 36 for a first-day haul of 79 points, two points clear of their closest pursuers Masaya Hishida and Eiji Kumazawa.

Kumazawa scored 39 while Hishida had a 38 to grab the second place overall.

At joint third and two points off the pace are the pairs of Marcelino Po and Edwin Espina, and Paolo Borromeo and Jimmy Kang. Po had 38 while Espina scored 40. Borromeo’s 42 points made up for Kang’s 33.

Six pairs scored 74 points to take a share of the fourth spot in the invitational tournament, which will last until the weekend.

Toby Florendo shot 41 points, while partner Frederic Chiongbian had 33; Marko and Benji Sarmiento scored 37 each; Blake Go and Fred Abundo had a 41 and 33, respectively; Marlou Velasquez scored 36 and Rod Señido 38; and Jonji Chiongbian and Mike Celdran had a 39 and a 35, respectively.

Meanwhile the leaderboard is expected to be overhauled today when the rest of the 400-player field tee off. (ML)
