Hontiveros nails winner
Dondon Hontiveros drained a trey in crunchtime as San Miguel slammed the door on Sta. Lucia, 81-78, and advanced to the quarterfinals in the Gran Matador PBA Philippine Cup last night at the Philsports Arena.
Meanwhile, Coca-Cola lived to play another day after the Tigers evened the best-of-three series against Purefoods at 1-all following a 98-84 win.
Hontiveros, who finished with a game-high 23 points, shooting 4-of-10 from 3-point range, clinched the Best Player of the Game honors. The Beermen will face Alaska Milk in the best-of-three quarterfinals.
The Realtors led in the first quarter behind the frontcourt tandem of their prized rookie Nelbert Omolon and Dennis Espino. The Beermen, however, were always close behind, but didn’t take the lead until halfway in the final quarter after a 65-all deadlock.
Coca-Cola’s John Arigo topscored with 27 points to force a sudden-death game against the TJ Hotdogs at 7 p.m. today. The winner will face Shell in the next round. (KIP)
